The groundwork for a sustainable economy

Lately, I realized that I was not as concerned about the climate as some other people around me. Personally, I did not think about the consequences that my own behavior had on our climate. Our usage of plastic bags for our goods, fossil fuels, and other unsustainable human endeavors, are not without consequences. Sooner or later, we will have used up most of the earth’s precious resources and now is the time to find alternatives for solutions for our overconsumption. Because in the end, climate change, is a product of our over consumptive behavior. There […]

The Technocracy

A major outage led to the unavailability of Facebook and its subsidiaries WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger on Monday evening. The outage started at approximately 17:30 and lasted until 23:50. About 3.5 billion users of Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger combined were unable to check their feeds and receive messages. This event led to a surge in activity on Twitter, of users who took to vent about the outage. Personally, this outage was a wakeup call on how much I truly rely on WhatsApp for most of my day-to-day communication. I realized how a corporate entity […]

Social engineering

The UG is taking new measures to prevent hackers from attacking their network. Therefore, we have been subjected to the mandatory password change, and soon, the university will require two-factor authentication for all it’s users. These measures will make it more difficult for attackers to gain access to the networks of the university, however, no matter how strong your password is, you should never forget that people are the weakest link in the security chain. That’s why we are often responsible for the failure of security systems. During the corona pandemic we have observed a […]

NFTs: the next big thing

For ages we have been looking at art as a physical collectible: The Mona Lisa is a painting, the Statue of Liberty is a huge copper statue, and the Balloon Dog (by Jeff Koons) is a stainless-steel sculpture. But in the recent months, a new kind of collectibles has arisen: the NFT. NFTs or non-fungible tokens are unique digital tokens that people can collect, like artworks. What makes NFTs special is the fact that they are intangible. They are one-of-a-kind assets in the digital world, that can be bought and sold, just like physical pieces […]

Cyber-physical attacks

Computers are taking over manual labor at an unprecedented rate. Currently, 29% of all labor is automated. It is expected that, in the US alone, 38% of jobs are automated by 2030. This increasing level of automation also paves the way for new forms of attack by domestic or foreign actors: cyber-physical attacks. Stuxnet In 2010 a new kind of computer virus was discovered in nuclear facilities in Natanz, Iran. The virus targeted PLCs (programmable logic controllers) that controlled centrifuges in uranium enrichment facilities. It is widely believed that the virus’ primary target was the […]

Bitcoin: the 21st century gold

Most of you have probably heard about it in the news lately: the Bitcoin price is reaching new highs, which have never been seen before. This is mainly due to the fact that several financial firms have announced that they will invest their money into bitcoin. Other firms have predicted that the bitcoin price will increase, some saying even that it will reach $146K before the end of 2021. This is quite interesting considering the fact that bitcoin is a relatively new asset, and most people think this is pure speculation. That is not so […]

Black Friday

It is almost that time of the year again: Black Friday. The day were most of us spend a lot of money (almost 90% more than usual) on presents for ourselves, friends, and relatives. A day which is well-known for its raging hordes of Black Friday shoppers. We have all seen the extreme videos were usually well-behaved individuals act like animals. The men and woman who run down the escalators at full speed and try to grab whatever they can on their way to the checkout desk. Interestingly, due to COVID-19, this year’s Black Friday […]

Stop the Democracy

The liberal democracy. For long, we have been led (or rather misled) to believe that the liberal democracy is the ideal system of governance. On one hand, it is true that democracies tend to give their subjects great freedom and prosperity. However, on the other hand, decision-making in democracies is negatively affected by emotions and biases. The average individual is politically uninformed, biased, and even incompetent, resulting in irrational decision-making. Perhaps, in our increasingly complex world, we need another system of governance. A system where rational political decisions are made to achieve optimal outcomes. Epistocracy […]

The ‘Do-Nothing’ Democrats

In late 2019, U.S. President Donald J. Trump caused widespread uproar amongst the Democratic electorate. The turmoil came after the president called the Democrats ‘Do-Nothing’.  Okay. Stop right here. I know what you’re thinking. First of all, this is not going to be the nth article talking about President Trump. In fact, this article will be solely dedicated to the topic of widespread public disagreement, that is: controversy. Many people associate controversy with something ‘bad’. Hence, when certain controversial topics become the topic of debate, a heated exchange of views is nothing out of the […]

The ‘New’ normal

The measures taken during the current global coronavirus pandemic will not last for a few more weeks. Instead, these measures may last forever. This pandemic is unlike anything we have ever experienced before. Almost all aspects of our daily lives have been altered to sustain an almost unorthodox way of living. Society has successfully shifted from an open society to one where social distancing is the norm. We have profoundly changed the way we work, socialize, shop, exercise, and educate ourselves. Most of us want things to go back to normal in the coming few […]

Is life a video game?

Reality is probably not what it seems. The simulation hypothesis proposes that all of reality, including the earth and the universe, is in fact, a computer simulation. This proposition is, in fact, based on fundamental principles of human reasoning. Billions of years have passed since the formation of the earth. Early carbon-based life forms have had compelling experiences, to say the least. Imagine for a second, that the senses we experience, the things we observe, are all but a simulation, in which we are the “sims”. Computational power is increasing at an unprecedented rate, unlike […]

Guess the number of M&M’s in the jar and win …

We have all seen it at least once in our life: ‘Guess the number of M&M’s in the jar and win …’. Unfortunately, most of us have never been able to give an accurate guess. However, there exists a concept that can consistently yield accurate guesses.  The wisdom of crowds is the concept that a large group of people has a higher collective intelligence than individual experts. This idea is applicable to a vast variety of instances including problem-solving, decision-making, forecasting, and policymaking. For example, some companies measure market sentiment via Twitter feeds. Data from […]
